BANGKOK, Sept 16 (TNA) - Thailand and Germany will co-host an international conference on food safety and nutrition in late October to forge new international food standards, a senior Thai official said on Friday.
Somchai Charnnarongkul, Deputy Director of the National Bureau of Agricultural Commodity and Food Safety (ACFS), said the 28th Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses taking place in Thailand's northern resort province of Chiang Mai will be the first time that the event is held outside the European Union (EU).
He said around 350 government officials and representatives from more than 100 countries and 38 international organizations would take part in the conference, scheduled for October 3 through November 3, to set updated international food standards.
Mr. Somchai said Thailand would table several food safety and nutrition issues, including sugar controls in cereals for infants and young children and standard control for infant milk formula products.
''It will also be an opportunity for Thailand to show to other countries its potential of food exports with safety and nutrition,'' he said.
